Description

FORMAT. is 2 years old on 2nd December.

Kicking off way back in February, this year has been well and truly blessed. We've showcased the freshest new names like Girl Unit and Addison Groove; referenced our roots via legendary heads - Hatcha and Youngsta; had the honour of hosting the Saturday showcase event at the FutureEverything Festival and presented some of this years outstanding producers including Rustie, Untold and Roska.

So come help us celebrate and kick off year 3!

-

Over the past 24 months we’ve brought to Manchester:

To help us celebrate our , we’ve enlisted the services of two of the founding fathers of the contemporary 140BPM soundscape: Pinch & Distance. Playing alongside them is Manchester impresario and fast rising star Illum Sphere.

Room two is presented by “Friends of Format”. Showcasing a few of our favourite Manchester-based DJ’s but with a twist: they’re all doing back-to-back sound clashes.

Strictly Birthday party vibes all night long. Cake, Cava, cheap liquor and FUNKTION 1 sound in the dance.

The Godfather of the 'Bristol sound', Pinch has been one of the main dubstep players since bringing the sound to his home city in early 2004. His sound is truly unique; infused with minimal techno grooves, 2-Step hooks, IDM bleeps and bone-chilling basslines. Otherwise known as Rob Ellis, Pinch’s 2009 debut album, 'Underwater Dancehall' received huge support from the world press receiving 9/10 in Vice, 5/5 in Mixmag and album of the month in DJ Mag – to name a few.

Pinch’s recent output has continued to outstretch the confines of his adopted Dubstep pigeonhole – jumping between jacking, Deep House influenced sub-130bpm tracks like “Croydon House” to the devastating sledgehammer that is “The Boxer” via Berlin dub-techno explorations with Pavel Ambiont.

One of our favourite producers across all genres. Pinch has been consistently groundbreaking, impossible to pigeonhole and deftly uncompromising since his debut release.

Greg Sanders AKA Distance needs no introduction. His production output has been utterly formidable since 2004 and maintained an instantly recognisable signature sound throughout. Those early releases on Hot Flush, Tectonic and Planet Mu pushed him into the emerging Dubstep consciousness, resulting in appearances on the seminal Dubstep takeover session on Mary-Anne Hobbs' Radio 1 show and winning the highly coveted Dubstep Forum Award for Album of the year in 2007 with his all taking 'My Demons'.

Much of his work bares the influences of his early love for Metal music – juxtaposed with the syncopated rhythms of his later affections for dark Garage and Jungle. Recent releases such as “Jungle Fear” marry these seemingly disjointed influences perfectly. One aspect that has remained throughout his productions is that they are made with the dancefloor firmly in mind, making his almost exclusively dubplate DJ performances uttely overwhelming.

That no-one else has been able to replicate Distance’s drum programming style or caustic production aesthetic is testament to his individuality as an artist.

This guy needs no introduction..

Illum Sphere’s debut EP landed on Manchester’s Fat City Recordings in March 2009. Since then, the Hoya:Hoya and Sketch City promoter has gone on to remix the likes of Martyn, record a mix for current purveyors of cool: FACT Magazine and bag a BBC 1xtra Music Award. Using a knowledge of music that is beyond his years, Illum Sphere creates a sound that draws influence from hip-hop as much as it does from psych, jazz and Detroit techno...

Suffice to say, we're very lucky to have him grace the FORMAT. Birthday dance.
