Modest Mouse - MOVED OUTDOORS

Biggest complaints: Lots of idiots in the crowd, they didn't play "The World At Large", and closing with a cover song was ridiculously anti-climactic. Other than that, it was a fucking amazing show. Their opening with "Gravity Rides Everything" was fucking beautiful, and I loved how intense their harder songs were live. So glad I finally got the cross Modest Mouse of my list of bands I need to see.

I didn't expect to make any friends with my review, but to imply that last.fm is a poor indication of what fans want to hear is silly. Last fm is the definition of what people want to hear ... because they actually had to listen to it. The fact is that only 2 of the five encore songs had crowd participation. Now I know the response is well that's cause they aren't real fans, or they don't know good music. Like I said, if they were here every year and wanted to play some esoteric stuff that's cool, but basically we just saw a once in 10 year show that closed with a cover (which is a cardinal sin in my book) . I do agree that there were way too many drunks and stoners for my taste, because watching a concert sober would be like hunting .... sober.

There are a ton of songs they *could* have played, but it's about the songs they *did* play. I believe this is the only time this year that they've played Missed The Boat so far which is very cool. Also, with regard to the stage show comment, I agree that there could have been a bit more banter, but I wasn't expecting pyrotechnics and stuff - this is Modest Mouse after all, not KISS. My biggest complaint about the show was how old the crowd around me made me feel - I'm pretty sure most of them were in high school when the last MM LP came out. Ha ha ha. Damn. I guess I AM old!

I completely agree with BernieBones. As for me personally, I'm glad they didn't play "Float On." I'm sorry, but that song is really not that good. It's very generic and definitely my least favorite Modest Mouse song; and it's not even because that's their most popular song.. It's just mediocre. Modest Mouse have such a large discography, and there are SO MANY better songs to play than "Float On." Starting their set off with "Gravity Rides Everything" was key, and going right into "Bury Me With It" was awesome. When they played "Broke," I almost got teary-eyed. That song is amazing, and it sounded so good last night. Also, hearing "Shit Luck" and "Custom Concern" was a nice surprise! I'd much rather hear old Modest Mouse songs than their newer material. P.S. They fuckin' killed it on "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes." Wow. ♥

Come on, man, They played tons of great songs. And for anyone to say that Modest Mouse's best songs are the Top 10 on Last.fm is crazy, I would hardly say that Float On is their best song, not by a long shot. I found that the songs that you hear the least amount were the best ones. Tiny Cities was amazing, Shit Luck was crazy fun, and Broke was beautiful. I do agree, there were some misses, I could easily see Doin' The Coakroach being a much bigger crowdpleaser than Dance Hall, but you could tell that there were parts where they were appealing to the much more surface Modest Mouse fans. Regardless, the fact that they played so many songs that have yet to be released was even more of a reason to appreciate their show. If there was any problem I had with the show last night, it was the crowd. So many downers.

I am going to have to disagree fuzmeister, while Modest Mouse at times sounded amazing, they simply did not play some of their best songs. This is the first time they have been to Pittsburgh in a long time, and they didn't even play Float On. I understand if they we here every year and wanted a more esoteric set, that's cool, but they simply played the songs they wanted. Quick look at the top 10 songs according to Last.fm 1. Float On (No) 2. Dashboard (Yes) 3. World At Large (No) 4. Ocean Breathes Salty (No) 5. Missed the Boat (Yes) 6. Bukowski (No) 7. 3rd Planet (No) 8. The View (Yes) 9. Bury Me With It (Yes) 10. Gravity Rides Everything (Yes) I understand they have a large library, but there were some clear misses last night. The show also lacked any sort of stage show, just people playing instruments. In the end the show was good, but it left me wanting more, and knowing their touring schedule, that may not happen for another 10 years.
