Macklemore dedicated “Growing Up” to his newborn daughter, Sloane, who was born on May 29, 2015. The song reveals the hopes and fears of a soon-to-be father and contains advice for his future child. It was released in advance of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' sophomore album This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, and features a soaring Ed Sheeran hook to complement the otherwise laid-back vibe.

Macklemore released a letter to accompany the song that explained his state of mind during the writing process:

“I’ve always had some make-believe image of who I would be as a father… the hypothetical “dad” version of me looked completely different than the man whose heart was beating out of his chest on the carpet, praying to a god or spirit I hadn’t talked to in months… And I knew I had to change…

There is nothing like the joy and happiness that comes from bringing a baby into this universe. She has filled my heart in ways that I never knew were possible. She is the love of my life. This song is for her.“

In an interview with The New York Times, Macklemore revealed the featuring spot on “Growing Up” was actually first offered to Adele:

“She graciously passed.“
