Biography
Peoria, Arizona band, Boys and Frogs, has been creating music since their conception in January 2009. Founding members, composer Michael Alexander and female-percussionist Carissa Encinas, met at Glendale Community College as Music Production and Music Business majors, respectively, and seemed to have the perfect arsenal to independently create efficient, progressive art. Being disconcerted with their previous bands, Michael and Carissa decided to assemble a group together. With the addition of pianist/saxophonist Daniel Seckler and bassist Ben Schwartz, they began recording and playing live music immediately. Only months after their inception, with a little help from their friends and family, these self-produced recordings were completed and released in November 2009 as “In Desperate Need of a Car Crash”. The debut album, consisting of seven highly ambitious songs, has a sound of its own; uncommon instruments to the indie genre such as tympani, cellos, violas, auto-harp, flutes, tubular bells, French horns, trumpets, and saxophones are heard throughout the album. The album’s diverse and differing approach from song to song sounds as if each were recorded by a different band or channeling a different muse or spirit. The eerily emotional cover art, painted by painter/artist/collaborator, Eric Kasper, immediately gives an insight to the strange sounds and lyrics of the album. Their sound is stripped down for their live performances. During the live sets, lead singer, Michael, often switches between the acoustic guitar, organ, piano, and auto-harp. Carissa is known for an aggressive and almost dance-like approach to drumming, especially notable during the visual fan-favorite, “O Here We’re Tangled”. Daniel is a creative saxophonist and charming pianist, while the bass drives the band with aggressive and pop-influenced lines. The diverse styles each member contributes to Boys and Frogs may explain why their fans have a difficult time categorizing the band into a genre. Boys and Frogs has been compared to artists such as David Bowie, The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, and The Beach Boys to sounds such as The Smiths, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, and The Format. These sounds, combined, bring you a musical style that has never before been created.
