The great thing about Mingus is that he didn't think of himself as a, "jazz musician." He wanted to be Stravinsky and at the same time adored the music of Joni Mitchell - there is an unfinished recording of what the Charles Mingus/Joni Mitchell album was going to be before he died. He transcended any academic genres and just pushed music to his own personal limits. We don't have that anymore and it isn't right.

He absorbed many styles, incorporated them into his own music, and was a visionary beyond the "jazz" label. Also to note, he wasn't the only one expressing this sentiment of "I'm not a jazz musician" by "jazz" musicians. Take a look at what Bird said at the end of his 1948 Downbeat Blindfold test on jazz, here's a snippet; "as far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing...[p]ersonally, I like to call it music, and music is what I like." I know others expressed similar sentiments too about the label being restrictive or not representative of their music or simply preferring words like "modern" or "creative."

So true and Coltrane felt the same way when he said - "Jazz is a word they use to sell our music, but to me that word does not exist. It is music." And to add further insult to injury, the label continues and what is called, "jazz" today - modern jazz - is more an exercise in technical proficiency, lacking the creative energy and presence that so much of the music from the 40's, 50's and 60's contained. We need new words or less words, because the academic categorization does nothing more than, "catalogue" and is not reflective of the amazing music.

"Good jazz is when the leader jumps on the piano, waves his arms, and yells. Fine jazz is when a tenorman lifts his foot in the air. Great jazz is when he heaves a piercing note for 32 bars and collapses on his hands and knees. A pure genius of jazz is manifested when he and the rest of the orchestra run around the room while the rhythm section grimaces and dances around their instruments." - Charles Mingus

Charles Mingus, Miles Davis & John Coltrane were different from other musicians in that you get the sense that were like gods among people, or at least, they were speaking the voice of god through their music.

i don't think I've ever heard music that sounds more 'urban' than the compositions of Charles Mingus.

Black Saint and the sinner lady was the OG Metal before Metal album. Like bro snuck two breakdowns and a Skank Beat into Track B and thought we wouldn't notice.

Wonderful jazz musician. Drop the G out of Charles' surname and then put in a K. You get the Boy Meets World character. It makes me wonder if the character Minkus came from Mingus. Anyone know? I doubt it, but ya never know!

Take "Mingu" from Charles' surname and replace it with "Peni". You'll get shocked.
