This song demonstrates what a genius of a songwriter Bowie was. The coldness and remoteness of his delivery perfectly mirrors the coldness and remoteness of Johnny. Johnny is disillusioned with life, and shows no emotion or empathy. He's lost in his past regrets. That's exactly how Bowie sounds in his singing delivery. Absolutely perfect, and it conveys the exact message Bowie wanted to send.

"so creepy how dead-eyed he sings this" That's the trick, when you sing it in that way it makes it more creepy.

I wish Marrianne Faithfull would sing Repetition with her Broken English tone of voice style! (2)

Does the Johnny in this have any relation to the one mentioned in "I'm Afraid of Americans"?

yes great track this is. That line "Anne with the blue silk blouse" is actually a reference to Eno's "Julie with her open blouse..." I wish Marrianne Faithfull would sing Repetition with her Broken English tone of voice style!

"Can't you even cook? What's the good of me working when you can't damn cook?" So sad song :( I feel angry feelings towards Johnny! Can you believe, I hate a person who only lives in a song? Great, powerful song.
