Ellington was, I'd say, a far better composer than instrumentalist. Few can be best at everything. His composition talent speaks for itself. But as a jazz pianist, he had many betters. I would generally agree.

I admire Ellington immensely, but I sometimes feels he over-intellectualises his compositions, so that they lose their drive. I'm also a Bill Basie man, whose minimalist piano-playing complements his band brilliantly. In contrast, I find the Duke's piano-playing rather static. This track exemplifies my worries. Coming to it after a burst of Peterson or Thelonius, this actually really isn't very interesting. Happy to hear from anyone who thinks this is heresy.
