“To call me a sexist… for me, it’s still not a negative name. If I am a sexist, it is a gift. Not everybody can fuck two women every day. So, if I can fuck two women every day and they [critics] don’t like it, I am sorry for them…”

i mean the dude was fucking horrible to women, so far from perfect. his activism and music are monumental though and due to historical and cultural differences his brutal misogyny is not an easy subject to broach but if anyone were to suggest he was without fault as a human being they would be wrong

And who tf suggested he was without faults? But the dude had the balls to stand against the military junta of his country, and they actually felt threatened by his works. He's one of the few musicians who actually made a change through his music, and with a genre he created, perfected and popularized. That's more, way more admirable than most musicians.

fair enough I just wouldn't want someone to be discouraged from listening to certain music because it's "not for them" you get me?

Heh, I'm as white as you can be, which is kinda expected when you're from Eastern Europe :) So I live in a country which has been colonized and brutally reshaped by stronger European nations up until very recent time, whose indigenous culture and language has been almost completely erased by now. And, for the last thirty years, my country has been controlled by the same group of people who has a nice habit of stealing elections and then brutally suppressing any protests. Which is how I got a long scar across the back of my neck. So can I relate to one of my favourite songs ever, Sorrow, Tears and Blood, and not just enjoy abstractly its sound? Guess I can. This is not to say that all what Fela did I would or should easily understand. But the wall between his music and my life is not impenetrable, even though I'm white. So it goes.

the tags are so confusing, are we supposed to leave all releases as just Fela Kuti?

When you learn about his life story, it really throws things in perspective. A man of privilege, who gave everything up for his beliefs; a man that really did get beaten down again and again but stood right up and kept on preaching; a man who as a band leader stands up among the greats: James Brown, Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, Captain Beefheart- and (cough) Mark E. Smith. Dodgy views on women, mind you,,,, but hey- if he'd been alive today, maybe he'd have changed his mind.
