The song is about how the narrator hurt someone they care about. However, they refuse to accept any fault. Instead, they place the blame on the person they hurt, saying, “I warned you.” They feel that this person should have expected to be hurt and that they put themselves in that position.
In these particular lines, the subdued, melancholy voices of Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons describe the pain of the narrator as they realize what hurt they’ve imposed on their past lover. Despite knowing their supposed toxicity would negatively affect their significant other, the guilt pains them all the same.
