it’s the best-sequenced greatest hits album of all time, isn’t it? (which, combined with the overall quality and scope of the music, would mean it’s probably the greatest greatest hits album period.) what even comes close?

i love the idea of including a micro-short song, but "hit" didn't age so well on this album, for obvious reasons...would've been better to have gone with "cigarette tricks," "gold hick," or even "indian fables"

i know this is a greatest hits so it's a reasonable place to use the gussied up version of "game of pricks," but i'm sorry, it's just so inferior. great live, but inferior on record

really cool they used the original 4-track versions of "hunting knife" and "teenage fbi," though

interestingly, the hardcore UFOs version of this album uses the original alien lanes “pricks” instead

tobin hasn’t done himself any favors in recent years, but still, even for a one-disc cream of the crop, he’s underrepresented here. “to remake the young flyer” is his only purely solo cut here (“coldfront” splits songwriting and lead vocals with bob), and it’s an inspired choice, but at minimum we should’ve gotten “gleemer” too

come to think of it, that reminds me, this album’s biggest sin was completely snubbing vampire on titus! arguably their best album! “gleemer” would’ve killed two birds

something just dawned on me…it’s funny to think that if this comp were made today, they’d absolutely have to include at least one more tobin song: “awful bliss.” of course, back in 2003 they never could’ve imagined that song becoming a hit, but here we are

pretty brilliantly sequenced for sure, i wonder who (or who all) worked on that

i just heard the hardcore UFOs version that is the same tracklist, just chronological. far worse! the standalone retail version really is so much better…but it does just so happen to work out that “the best of jill hives” makes for a gorgeous, gorgeous closer (but even then, “i am a scientist” was the correct answer)

Trying to figure out GBV's greatest hits is a tricky one, their discography is so vast and expansive that no matter what you do, you'll only ever be scratching the surface. That said, this is an excellent compilation, as it covers almost every album GBV have done from 1987 to 2003 and gets some solid tracks in there, the best part is that it isn't in chronological order, I feel like they were arranging the tracks so that it flowed just as well as one of their numerous studio albums, and that's the most important thing at the end of the day.
