« I’ve had several lives »
These are the first words that come to my mind when I am asked to describe my journey.
Yes, I have had many lives, professional and otherwise, I dived into different styles of music, at several times. Jazz caught me in my early days, I tried to copy as much as I could from John Coltrane and Miles Davis. But one day, I gave them up as you leave a girl before sunrise.
I went with pop, where I met two totally different people from me, I started writing songs, we started a band, Shine. The adventure lasted several years.
Having just started out, our first gig was opening for Sia in London, we did not understand what was happening. Everything was going too fast for us. Radios would play our music but we were not quite ready. After two or three years of work, we released our first album.
The English band Morcheeba liked the album a lot and took us under their wing for an epic tour of Europe where we cooed in cool pop.
One summer night I stumbled upon the movie of the birth of the Glastonbury festival. On stage were four crazy awesome guys, including an unknown (to me at the time), Terry Reid. I jumped onto the internet straight away to find him. I sent an email, I really wanted wanted to work with him. After a few adventures, a year later, Terry came to Paris to record three of my songs. I think it was a chance of a lifetime to work with such an outstanding talent, I was fortunate enough to grab it. This collaboration opened the door to us and to the United States including an invitation to SXSW in Austin in 2010 After that, it was like returning from an Apollo mission, life (as a group) lacked flavour. We somehow released a last album, but we couldn’t stand it anymore.
I went through my little tunnel, as many people do. I kept playing music on sundays, I started writing again, aimlessly. I swam in my melancholy, where I met Nick Drake or Jose Gonzalez on the way. And when I finally felt ready in late 2013, I presented myself with my guitar in front of microphones, I sang a title and I thought to myself, ok, this time, you’re going to show the real you. I gave up all ideas of sophisticated, ambitious orchestration. I wanted to get closer to me. I meant « I ».
Most songs are based on vocals / guitar live tracks. I am unable to bluff when I use music as a way to express my emotions. It terrified me before diving into it but now, I do like this new life.

"J'ai eu plusieurs vies"
Ce sont les premiers mots qui me viennent quand on me demande de décrire mon parcours.
Oui, j'ai eu plusieurs vies, plusieurs vies amoureuses, plusieurs vies professionnelles, dans un bureau, dans la "nature", peu importe.
J'ai plongé dans plusieurs musiques, dans plusieurs époques. Le jazz m'a happé à mes débuts, je copiais comme je pouvais John Coltrane ou Miles Davis. Mais un beau jour, je les ai abandonnés, comme on quitte une fille avant le lever du soleil.
Je suis parti avec la pop. La garce. J'ai rencontré deux personnes totalement différentes de moi, je me suis mis à écrire des chansons, on a monté un groupe, Shine (www.shine-music.net). L'aventure a duré plusieurs années.
On a joué notre premier concert en première partie de Sia à Londres, on ne comprenait rien ce qui se passait. Tout allait un peu trop vite pour nous. Les radios nous passaient mais nous, on n'était pas prêts.
Au bout de deux ou trois ans d'efforts, on a sorti notre premier album. Les anglais de Morcheeba l'ont beaucoup aimé et nous ont pris sous leur aile le temps d'une tournée épique.
On roucoulait dans la pop cool. Jusqu'à ce soir d'été où je tombe par hasard sur le film de la naissance du festival de Glastonbury. Sur scène, quatre fous géniaux, dont un inconnu (pour moi à l'époque), Terry Reid.
Je me jette sur l'internet, je le retrouve, je lui écris, je voulais travailler avec lui. Après de multiples péripéties, un an plus tard, Terry débarque à Paris pour enregistrer trois de mes chansons.
Je ne m'en suis toujours pas remis. Je crois qu'on a, au mieux, une occasion dans sa vie de travailler avec une personne totalement hors du commun, j'ai eu cette chance.
Cette collaboration nous a ouvert la porte des Etats-Unis avec notamment une invitation au SXSW à Austin en 2010.
Après ça, c'était comme de revenir d'une mission Apollo, la vie (d'un groupe) ordinaire manquait de goût. On a sorti tant bien que mal un dernier album, mais la messe était dite pour Shine.
J'ai traversé mon petit tunnel à moi, comme font beaucoup de gens. Je jouautais le dimanche, j'écrivais encore, sans but précis. J'ai nagé dans ma mélancolie, j'y ai rencontré Nick Drake ou José González, on a bien sympathisé.
Et quand je me suis senti enfin prêt, fin 2013, je me suis posé avec ma guitare devant les micros, j'ai chanté un titre et je me suis dit : ok, cette fois, tu vas te montrer.
J'ai abandonné toutes idées de son sophistiqué, d'orchestration ambitieuse. Je voulais me rapprocher de moi. Je voulais dire "je".
La plupart des titres de cet EP partent d'une base live, voix, guitare. Je suis bien incapable de bluffer alors je me sers de la musique comme d'un moyen d'exprimer mes émotions.
Elle me terrifiait avant de m'y plonger mais je crois que je l'aime bien cette nouvelle vie.
