Sadly you're right. It was the "loudness war", and Rick Rubin, the producer, was one of the biggest culprits of that stuff. He destroyed so many great albums with his ultra loud production. Everything was brickwalled, with no dynamic range at all. Even the silence sounds loud, and the loud parts are just broken.

Great cover but yeah what is with the maxxing out on the mic I thought it was like a stylistic choice but it just sounds like sloppy recording and mixing

I prefer the original song written and played by Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor) but I like this song even done by Johnny Cash , the guitars, the melodies, the vocals

instead of arguing over which version is better lets do this: admit both versions suck

this has to be one of the saddest, most haunting songs ever sung. it's like you can feel the conformity of aging and being closer and closer to death in his voice... it adds such a somber tone to an already masterful song. so good.

"What have I become, my sweetest friend? Everyone I know, goes away... in the end" Holy crap man. :(

Trent wrote some great lyrics, but with Johnny Cash's age behind this, it makes it all the more poignant. One of my all time favorite covers, and one of the few songs to make me cry.

It’s crazy that this probably has more plays on Spotify then NIN’s entire discography does. I mean I like this but jeez

So much despair and sorrow in Cash's voice. Reznor was right when he said that this is Cash's song now. So great.

I used to listen to this song on the loudest volume as a kid when I was out bicyklin down the steep road and leves wiped my face as I flew by in what felt like hundred kilometers per hour. I felt immortal, and I loved it.
