The first jazz album I heard, and one of the albums that changed my perception of what music can be

probably the essential winter-inside-with-a-blanket album. i am so excited to enjoy it that way this upcoming winter- especially now that i've been listening to more jazz this year and actually know what's going on in it, lmao

My dad had this on vinyl and I always thought it was a cigarette in Mile's mouth, the majority of the album cover was cut out to reveal the blue vinyl beneath and our cover had a blue sticker in the bottom right corner. I honestly thought it was called the smoking saxophone album for maybe 15 years until my dad corrected me a few years ago when I asked if he still had it. Reminds me of better days where as a kid I could just lay on the sofa and listen to things all day.

Not my personal favorite Jazz album (or Miles album, for that matter), but I feel that this is the best album for a Jazz novice to start with. It's very accessible without being the least bit pedestrian. Truly a great work of art.

Easily one of the best albums ever recorded. Note for note it not only is the standard bearer for jazz, but Kind Of Blue stands on the stage of high musical art. 💿

Well said. The guy in your avatar is a huge part of why it's such a brilliant record, too.

@Gtzk I don't mean to sound like a snobby prick, although I could forgive myself for reponding as a snobbish prick to your dismissive, tossed-off statement about a record considered by most to be one of the key musical works of the 20th century, but if this only works as "pleasant background noise" for you, then you really need to read more deeply about what this music is doing and why it has the legacy it has. Hint: It's not because it's "pleasant background noise," it's because the album changed the way people played jazz and performed solos. Kind of Blue isn't even my favorite Miles Davis album and it's nowhere near my favorite jazz album, but I would never dream of denying its artistic significance and influence on every jazz artist and album that came after. Dismissing this album is to jazz what dismissing Sgt. Pepper's is to pop or Trans-Europe Express is to electronic music -- a game-changing foundation upon which all the subsequent music stands.
