Not long ago my father sent me a collection of old family photographs featuring past generations of my forbears. Some were over 100 years old dating back to the Edwardian period, circa 1900. A particularly poignant photograph depicted my grandmother (mothers’ side) with three sisters posed around a plinth (on which sits the youngest) in front of a blank cloth background. She would have been around 12 years of age at the time and both she and her sisters stare blankly out towards the viewer as if frozen in thought as well as time. No sign of a smile or mischievous thought. No hint of their limited experience of the world thus far, or a glimpse of their daily environment, just blank disciplined expressions looking out from a sterile studio landscape. However, out of all the photographs I received that day it was this one which for some reason haunts me and I think of it often.
In contrast, all the other photographs depicted moments in time that had individual and personal significance. The pleasure of a particular place, the joy of a noteworthy event or a meeting of friends and family, all were deemed essential and needed to be marked and pasted into posterity. Looking through them forced me to think about people, places and time. Recognising some of the locations I was filled with the thought that perhaps in some way we all leave a trace of ourselves behind, influencing the landscape we pass through as well as each other.
So thanks to my father’s diligence in compiling and digitising this collection which was the inspiration for much of the music composed for ‘Echoes on a Landscape’, and in a strange way kind-of proves the point. – Geoff. Nossiter (aka Pax Alpha).
