Richard: Live @ The Art Cafe Masters played at the Art Cafe in Nottingham recently, the M.C. introduced him as sounding like Leonard Cohen putting up a shelf, playing songs cut from the moonlight. Fears of having to sit through a pretentious set were soon allayed.... Masters performed a set of narrative, melodic songs - elements often missing from singer songwriters (which has become something of a dirty word these days, as masters himself admitted). It was a set of compositions full of imagery and accusation, stories about an attempted coup on the Whitehouse (Don't want to be afraid), his experiences of working as a clown in a shopping mall (Wheels are broken), the crazy notions of a mad geographer (Mr. Beaumont) as well as a folk song about a blaggard called Bob Riddley. I wasn't sure what to think at the time but snatches of his songs kept going round my head for a week after, have had to listen to his stuff online to make some sense of it. Which, thankfully it does.
