Mezmerize > Hypnotize imho. This may become one of my favorites from them, amazing melodies, nice experimentation into different genres they haven't done before (Old School Hollywood is nothing like they've ever done before).

Really enjoyed this album. I can't even say which album I like the most - this one or Hypnotize. Both are superb.

i got hypnotize way before i got this album as a kid and listened to that more, and i still consider it better than this. even after giving this more attention recently, i wonder just how much of my preference is based off nostalgia factor

As a massive SOAD fan since their first album, I totally gave this and Hypnotize the cold shoulder when I noticed the significant increase in Daron's vocals, which I was never a fan of. Revisiting them, these albums are instrumentally fantastic, but I still can't stand Daron's singing and the lyrics are embarrassingly awful at times. "Choking chicks and sodomy. The kind of shit you get on your TV"? "Why don't presidents fight the war?" *shudder* They are still awesome, though. Anyone agree?

I think this one is their best album. I've never thought SOAD was a very good band from a lyrical perspective, but musically they've always been very good and only got better as time passed, with more and more complex arrangements and rhythms and so forth, and from a purely sonic standpoint I think Serj is a great vocalist (and a charismatic and entertaining showman), so really the lyrics on this one never struck me as any better or worse than on any of the other albums. And I don't mind Daron's singing really either. So I guess what I'm saying is I agree with you that this and Hypnotize are pretty great musically.

The presidents line is fine, it's to the point and anthemic, but the sodomy line (And other things like the whole of Cigaro) are indeed pretty bad. Their sense of humor really started getting in the way of writing good music by this point; All the more comedic songs (Cigaro, Porno, This Cocaine and Old School Hollywood) are meh to straight bad. That said, I really enjoy everything else - The bulk of the album is them widening their sound palette by writing thrashier songs (BYOB) and more prog-minded songs (Question) and fusing the two together, with a couple curve balls along the way (Radio/Video is reggae-inspired, Lost In Hollywood is a ballad). I prefer them more raw, unhinged and darker which is why their s/t will always be my favorite, but this is still pretty solid.

Mezmerize blows all of their prior releases out of the water. Completely. It's nothing short of monumental, truly a modern rock classic. Going with more rock elements as opposed to metal was the best choice possible.
