The Cars we're certainly pop oriented but generic is the last thing you can accuse them of being.

I'm 29 now, but I'll never forget when I was 16, and my brother told me to listen to a song on his Ipod. The synth, guitar, and drums in "Just What I Needed" through me down a New Wave rabbithole and I eventually became obsessed with their Greatest Hits album and DEVO. lol

Listening to "The Cars" (1978). An incredible debut album by a pioneering new wave American band. R.I.P. Ric Ocasek who passed away today. I'm so glad they were inducted into the RRHOF last year.

The last couple days have been really hard for 70s/80s rock. RIP Ric Ocasek and Eddie Money.

R.I.P. Ric Ocasek, you're all over social media and I didn't know you... ah well, looks like I'll check out The Cars! I knew about this band for years, but didn't listen to them.

The Cars ARE a "classic rock" band, despite the many dumbshits who categorize them as "pop". . Those who disagree blow roosters by choice. New Wave borrowed some elements of pop and electronica, but The Cars were heavily influenced by real rock n roll and their many rockabilly-style licks prove it. IMHO tho, the best part is they rejected the Beatles song structure for most of their albums. They were hipster before hipsters.

I hear ya ('76er), and I'm probably out of touch on what "pop" is these days. I'm starting to feel like my grandparents, looking at modern artists with almost horror! LOL

How did they reject Beatles song structures? I don't hear any traces of Beatles in their songs but I wasn't aware that they consciously rejected them.

The Beatles made "AABA form" popular, and it was difficult for bands to achieve big success unless they followed suit. Read: lots of choruses that made it easy for listeners to repeat a part of a song without knowing all the lyrics.
