Updated the info. There was a seed bank (a place where seeds of many species are preserved) in Leningrad established by Nikolai Vavilov (mentioned in the song). He'd collected seeds from around the world. His studies were mainly on crop genetics and improvement of yields to sustain the growing global population. Botanists at the seed bank chose to starve to death rather than eat the preserved seeds. “Solanum” is a genus of plant, some common representatives are tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants. “Asteraceae” is a family of plants, some common representatives are asters, sunflowers, daisies. “Babylon” was an ancient city, considered part of the cradle of civilization where many advances in agriculture were made. “All the grain of Babylon” is likely a reference to the diversity of crop species held within the seed bank. I’ll spare you from any further nerdery on my behalf. Unless, of course, you’d like to discuss the song or correct me on anything. Just note me or leave me a shout :]

"good song on a very mediocre album. " Haha what Mowie666? This is the definitely worst song on The Crane Wife.

this one actually kind of bores me, lyrics are way too repetitive... but it is indeed a direct rip of No Quarter...

When I first heard it it drove me crazy because I knew I had heard those four notes before. It's exactly like No Quarter by Led Zeppelin. The link goes directly to the point of interest but if you don't know it, do yourself a favor listen to the whole song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8Ip-VkufjY#t=1m45s

Of all the songs I've ever heard about Russians protecting seedbanks during sieges, I'd have to say this is my favourite

I don't know, I really like the vocals on this song, but I feel like the guitars are way too heavy and overpowering.

Yeah, I love the Decemberists and all, but this song is fucking terrible. It's easily their worst song.

God, I like this song a lot. I'm surprised people don't. I think that The Perfect Crime #2 is unquestionably worse.

pfft, it's a fine song. the only problem is the end is drawn out wayyy too far. ignoring that, it's one of my favorites on the album

Boring. Probably the most repetitive guitar part in any song ever. Very disappointed with the 'Brists.
