Machina may be against Yevon's teachings, but I do love it. The Sacred and Profane is S-tier.

She was credited, but apparently she had recorded some tracks for the album but her tracks were later scrapped.

Strange album, can consider as their worst and best at the same time. Buy I'm really like it.

I would guess that's only because the tag is easier to mess up for this than Zeitgeist, e.g. "Machina / The Machines of God".

actually not really surprising, Zeitgest was released around the time last.fm was most popular, so it makes sense if there was allot of hype behind it at the time, whereas this album is only for the pumpkin fans, of the original run the 2 machina's are the last most people will listen to and the least talked about.

lastfm can't be a parameter. There a lot of mess in this site. Many times a most popular album/song has less scrobles than another. It isn't a rule.

I really wonder if the pre-mastered version floating around the internets would have gotten a better reception than that god-awful clip-happy mix that got released. There is some brilliant material on this album but it's almost impossible to hear over the atrocious production.

Love this album. I remember very strongly being lost in a magical world of ... essay writing for uni (yay!?) and listening to this and Machina II (definitely yay!!)

Having a Machina day today. Also agree about the albums poor sound quality... first thing that turned me off about it... especially compared to the golden age mixing/mastering of SD. But seeing past that, this is quite an overlooked gem in the Pumpkins' work... a great farewell to the band and the cliches of the "grunge" era.

Does anyone else absolutely love this album? I don't understand all of the hate it always gets. It has so many great songs, some of which are my favorites from The Smashing Pumpkins.

The song's aren't bad but the mastering is awful! I can't help but feel the reason this album is regarded the way it is solely because of the way it sounds, it's so compressed, flat and lifeless + the is loads of clipping! In songs such as Raindrops most of the track is almost inaudible!

This is one of my favorite albums by the pumpkins. While I don't understand the claims of having the lyrical maturity of adore, if taken as its own singular body of work and not used as a basis for comparison to earlier albums, I think it's great. Lyrically, the song structure and lyrical content is a lot more conventional than earlier albums(lacks the intensity of Mellon Collie, and the harmonic composition of both Gish and Siamese Dream), and sounds similar to other alternative acts of that time period, yet even that doesn't necessarily make it bad. For what it is, it's great. Take away a few filler tracks and cut down the 5 minutes of fluff on Glass and the Ghost Children and it would only be that much better. As far as the ability to replicate the sound of the album live, yeah it lacks in that department given it's pretty overproduced, yet even that doesn't serve to devalue the album, as the usage of different atmospheric techniques is what made this particular album stand out.

Great album of my school days. Can anyone recommend similar albums/artists to the sound of this record? I'm having a hard time thinking of anyone who's done something similar.
