“MODERN JAM”, UTOPIA’s third track, is characterized by engaging synths and lively drums, setting it apart as a standout on the album. Travis Scott teaming up with emerging artist Teezo Touchdown contributes to the song’s overall ambiance, evoking connections to past hip-hop icons. Most notably, the drum pattern bears resemblance to that of Goodie Mob’s “Black Ice (Sky High)”.

Travis Scott begins the track with indirect mentions of God:

“To the maker, vibrator
Roof shaker, earthquaker
Annihilator“

Which subtly hints at the fact “MODERN JAM” uses a part the original instrumental of Kanye West’s “I Am a God”. Both tracks are the third of their respective albums, more specifically UTOPIA & Yeezus. UTOPIA draws heavy influence from Yeezus, such as how the subject matter of this track’s first verse matches that of West’s “On Sight”, or how “CIRCUS MAXIMUS” contains a similar drum pattern as “Black Skinhead” from Yeezus.

The song was produced by Scott and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, with additional production from Jahaan Sweet and Mike Dean.
