16-bit usually refers to a style of chiptune or chiptune inspired music that uses the sound of old computer consoles from the 16-bit era of video games. This music will often reflect, or consist of, sounds from technology that is seen as primitive or "outdated" such as the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES and/or homemade synthesizers.
