Apparently some of this stuff exists exclusively for humorous purposes, some bands don't have actual connection with metal genre and are generally limited to random screams over guitar distortion or some breakdowns here and there. PassCode, while being a 'serious' project, sounds just like another late 2000's mainstream 'electronicore'/post-hardcore band except for girls on vocals. There are some bands which mix j-pop melodies with actual metal though: for example, Fruitpochette (j-pop melodies over melodeath riffs and such), Haloperi Doll (kind of thrash/melodeath and j-pop fusion) and Party Rockets (their debut album Triangle has many songs which combine classic heavy metal riffs and rhythms with j-pop melodies). Some bands are extremely eclectic in this regard. On the other hand, Necronomidol have black metal, power metal and even a couple of classic heavy metal songs, which do not contain any j-pop influences at all, and probably should not be considered 'kawaii metal' as such.

I agree with this in regards to passcode. they are more of a metal-core/screamo. a good chunk of their songs are rather poppy too. This feels just like a catch-all term.

IRON ATTACK!'s 2007 Self-Titled album is possibly the first "kawaii metal" record. It mixes those classic metal tunes with J-Pop styled singing. And yeah, that shit came out back in 2007.

Nice to see Babymetal as the top artist ❤ This genre is gonna go somewhere with all the anti-idol/Idol metal groups popping up in Japan these days

I remember back when Babymetal started off and everybody said they were a gimmick and would last and now they're touring with the fucking big 4, as well as spawned their own micro-genre. This shit is gonna be the new nu-metal

They failed to launch 'kawaii metal' craze though. There were similar debut releases in 2014, but it's still mostly underground micro-movement. Only Babymetal managed to break into international mainstream. Probably the reason is that their success was due to surprise effect and a joke repeated twice ceases to be funny.

if it is (super) cute, AND (really) metal, then it is kawaii metal; having distorted guitar sounds does not make something metal; metal is a state of mind expressed in music; metal is hard, and generally has an edge to it, but can also be blunt, like a hammer or rod; metal usually hits, but can also protect; metal is for real, not fake, or pretend
