It is debatable whether troll metal could be considered a real metal sub-genre or not, but the term is often used in a comedic manner. Troll metal itself, however, is a mixture of folk metal and black metal, with lyrical and thematic emphasis on trolls, mythical creatures from the Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore. The most prevalent troll metal band is Finntroll.
