Hey! Thanks for the annual check-in, lol! I've been well though. Today was my birthday which was met with a heavy rain storm. I learned, however, that is a great sign of good fortune so I'm excited. How have you been?

Wow, has it been well over a year since I lasted shouted at you? Jeez. I saw your comment on Cleo Sol's page and saw that we both shed joyful (thug) tears to Mother. Except Build Me Up was the one that got me. :) How have you been???

Hey Atarashi! I've been well. I am currently in a Masters program so that has been my main focus as of late. You know what's funny? Despite having about a dozen favorite albums of the year, I've decided that this year has been so-so in terms of new gems so please, please, put me on the shit I've missed. lol. I see that you're also a fan of Shea Butter Baby. It really grew on me too. I need to see Ari live, actually. Are you still in in Japan?

I noticed that I forgot to mention my thoughts on Kindness' latest. Raise Up is my jam of the moment! I also like the Jazmine Sullivan and Robyn collabo but the rest? It can be sleep inducing. lol.

Congrats to the move back to Japan! That is exciting. Get away from Trump Land while you can. I actually go to my first concert in months this Sunday...I will see Khruangbin at the Wiltern in Koreatown. I really look forward to it. Gwen's latest is also a favorite of mine. It's so celestial. It sounds really nice next to another discovery on a similar vibe--Alex Isley's latest EP.

I actually want to see BP again! Once doesn't seem like enough. I feel like its the type of film that requires repeated viewings to truly capture all of its nuances. I bet the DVD/blu ray packaging of BP will be insane. I've been feeling Raevyn Lanae's Crush EP. Steve Lacy is a problem!!! Break out the member's only jackets, loafers (with no socks), pastel polos and avaitor shades...gotta love yatch rock. You ever heard of Slow Dancer? He captures everything great about yatch rock but with a modern twist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89WcSIYpk3s

Happy Black (Panther) Month to you too brotha! What did you think of it? I was fortunate to see the film for free via Colors on Friday night. It was incredible. It's amazing to see Black History being made before our very eyes. Sadly, I didn't dress up nor did most of the other theater goes BUT...go to any other screening in my immediate area and folks were all the way dressed up. And I'm here for all of it. lol. *Goes back to raiding your charts for new, unfounded heat*

Word?! Well, I'm back in LA so I have to catch up on the good shit in terms of live events. I did see Little Dragon back in CT last summer. They put on a really good show and Yukimi pointed me out in the audience so it was definitely memorable. lol. Pretty good list there...I couldn't get into Kelela's latest/official debut. It's sleepier than I expected but then again, I thought Cut 4 Me was boring on first listen and I wound up playing it to the ground so it could be a grower. lol. What's your top 5 or 10 for the year looking like?

Sorry about the lapse in response! My life has been undertaken by work and commuting to work (3 hours round trip!). I'm back on the East Coast but will probably visit Cali this summer as I still have some ties there. How is Seattle? Aside from the rain, the Space Needle and grunge, I know very little about the city. lol. Desus and the other guy whose name I forget are the Bodega Boys, right? LMAO! I noticed Drake's pop pan-Africanism. On one hand, it's great because it provides mainstream expsoure to different facets of the global black music disapsora but on the other hand, it's problematic because it's a knockoff of artists and genres that have been unfairly obscured. But it probably sold a million in a day, so what do I know? lol.

What's up bro?!?! Long time, no hear. Everything's been good. I started a brand new job that is very cool yet demanding so it's taken up a fair amount of time. Musical Massage--both the song and album--is pretty much the fantasy version of sex. It's never that smooth and luxurious in real life. LOL. What have you been listening to lately?

Yesterday I went to Durand Bernarr show at Refuge Live and he KILLED. I can't even describe how amazing he was. His background singers were also on point and he let each and every one of them shine. This dude made tea on stage while he was still hitting notes. He is a character and I was there for all of it. He played She's Always In My Hair, Prototype, Shit, Damn, Motherfucker etc etc, I will def see him again. I woke up this morning feeling brand new and refreshed because of his show. Yaaass! Yes it is obvious that me, you, and jdotperiod need to get together!

Hey Omg Afropunk was AMAZING and for the last day I was so overwhelemed with everything that I had to leave early because it got to crowded and I became so exhausted but I enjoyed my time nonetheless. I missed Kelela, Ras G, LSDXOXO, Ice Cube, Sango, Janelle Monae, TV on Radio but I saw so much I wasn't even mad. Laura Mvula was so good I basically cried through her whole set. And right b4 her Nikki Giovanni came on and gave a speech and read some poetry. Cee-Lo killed it! I got my faced painted by the artist by Laolu Senbanjo who did the the body paint artwork for Beyonce's video! Yo I am glad I stayed longer tho. I went to a burlesque show at a beautiful speakeasy and an amazing circus revue/cabaret/acrobatic show at this amazing venue/club called House of Yes. This artist Jojo Abot had this interactive 72 hour intimate show and presentation at a loft in Brooklyn. Omg I got my life! Sorry you haven't been able to experience the art scene here as much as you would like to.

Hey I've been good. Went to Afropunk and decided to extend my stay in NY to 2 weeks and explore the art scene and had the time of my life so I have been exploring Chicago's artists as well. Just an FYI I am not sure if Coultrain is performing today since it is not listed on their website calendar but today is the 1 year anniversary of Stony Island Arts Bank and tomorrow the artist in residence will be performin from 6 to 7pm then after that from 7 til 10 will be another event https://rebuild-foundation.org/event/one-beat-steve-coleman/ I love everything about the Rebuild Foundation, just amazing vibes, talent, & melanin! Yo are you going to the Kaytranada concert tonight??!! I'm so geeked! Also will be checking out Bonobo at the SmartBar tomorrow and Black Coffee at the MID afterwards!!

Bruh! How have you been??? Sadly, I couldn't go to the AfroPunk festival this year since I'm stuck on the West Coast. It's my first year not going since 2013. :( That's alright, I'll be in that bitch next year in the front row doing the dougie! lmao.

Look, we're going to need to have a reunion next year at AfroPunk! How's the West Coast treating you? Chicago has been fairly decent. There's this party group called "Party Noire" who has done there version of the NYC Everyday People day parties. so that's been keeping weekends pretty lit. I haven't been to a show for awhile because of work, but I need to figure out who I want to see soon...I Feel like its going to be KING....again, lol >.<

Hey bro!!! How is everything? I was at the BET Awards this year! It was pretty fun but quite exhausting. They actually shoot the telecast in two days with the larger scaled performances on Sunday (they were still building the set for Beyonce's performance on Saturday afternoon when we first started shooting the International segment). I also attended a "VIP" taping of 106 and Park later that evening which was fun...I have so many stories and celeb encounters that day, bro. lol. The new Blood Orange is well produced but it doesn't grab me by the throat like Cupid Deluxe did. The songs seem less memorable. Oh, I bumped into DJ Khaled in the parking lot during the BET weekend! He's short and fat in person. lol.

You know it!!! I can't stop playing it. His music just makes me want to break into an elaborate pop-n-lock routine! I may see him next week in Orange County. How has everything been? Are you thinking of hitting AfroPunk this summer? You know it's bad when you realize that you've seen about 70% of the performers on the lineup...#musicobsessiveproblems. lol.

I'm glad to hear that KING delivered live. They only did about 3 or 4 songs when they performed at Amoeba since they only had an hour or so. "Am I Wrong" is the jam! I'll give LB another chance. Bey is so much like MJ that it's not even funny. She so clearly models herself after him. Folks are just now noticing because of the explicit MJ references she made at the Super Bowl. "Formation" is her "They Don't Really Care about Us"; her black power phase. LMAO @ having the video on rotation for Black History Month! Afros, booty shorts, black berets and blonde weaves for everyone! :)

How was KING?! Too bad LFM hasn't been scrobbling my iPod lately because Lord knows my KING (and Anderson Paak) plays are through the roof. I hear something new every time I listen to We Are King. It's truly genius. I agree w/ your take on ANTI. I applaud her from stepping outside of her comfort zone; for artists like who who make music for the masses, it is quite bold to step outside of the proven money making formula. Of course, Bey couldn't let Rih enjoy her moment via her Black Power-influenced SB performance and all. lol. Lion Babe bores me after the first 4-5 tracks but I'll try again. LMAO, I was bouncing around quite a bit but I'm bound to LA for the next 2 plus years b/c of school. Things are taking off quickly and I do love it here so I'm glad. Come to LA!!! LOL.

Bro!!! How you been? KING's album is already one of my favorites of the year. I actually saw them perform live at Amoeba Music here in LA last week and they signed my copy of the CD afterwards. they're really sweet and gracious in person. The year's already started and so many releases have already come out. Yay or nay to Rihanna's ANTI? How about Lion Babe and Majid Jordan, which I just downloaded.

That's a good thing, bro! Gotta make that money. I worked crazy hours too so I can relate. I was in NYC in an attempt to start a new career. I will say that while NYC is a wonderful place to visit, it is not a place to live but others may differ. I did see a lot of good shows--many of them free--George Clinton & P-Funk, Erro (again), Roy Ayers, Bilal, Stevie Wonder and more. I focused on seeing the legends since you never know when you'll last see them. I wanna visit Chi-Town soon! Are y'all having a mild winter too? For strange reason, it's been mainly 40-60 degrees here in the Northeast so far this December. Can't complain tho! LOL, Beiber's latest seems like a white Chris Brown album, no?

Now that the Weeknd is a bonafide Top 40 artist now, Tiller may fill that void for creep nigga jams. LOL. I will check out Craft Spells. I have been so out of the loop with modern indie rock in the past year. I need to catch up. I actually saw Bilal last night in this small jazz club in the theatre district. It was dope but why I wound up spending $113 for the entire night. That's the type of ish I hate about NYC!!! I saw Stevie Wonder last weekend. Great show. HK put on a wonderful show. Did they come with Chance the Rapper?

Very tempting, sir....the VIP package comes w/ many perks including free BBQ! Who doesn't love free BBQ?! $250 is a bit more than I was looking to spend for this year's experience especially in light of placing a grip on a security deposit and first month of rent for a new place a couple days ago. Hmm...is there a time frame that you're looking to set it by?
