See, I love "Version 2.0" "beautifulgarbage," the latter while not perfect was really forward thinking, so I think it went over a lot of folks heads. Personally, "Return of Saturn" is my favorite, it is a very intimate record and places Stefani next to Persson as a great songwriter. Though, I love "Rock Steady" for its bold "Autoamerican" like position. In fact, check out this piece I did on Garbage & No Doubt being influenced on "beautifulgarbage" & "Rock Steady" by Blondie's "Autoamerican": http://qhblend.blogspot.com/2010/02/autoamerican-effect.html

Of the three premier alternative bands of the time (No Doubt, Garbage, Cardigans) No Doubt & The Cardigans had a much broader palette of sounds, and didn't apologize for it. Sadly, when Garbage attempted it ten years ago, their fans (predictably) turned their noses up, and Garbage back peddled to the noisy "Bleed Like Me," though it isn't a complete loss. I just think No Doubt and The Cardigans have had their work age better through the ensuing years, especially The Cardigans. There's a rumor on the wind that they may be reuniting, I hope so anyway.

I think it is a shame people ride DD the way they do. They are one of the most versatile pop groups in existence. They've had a common thread through all their work to be honest. I've only seen one professional review mention the heavy synth draw in the new title track owing to the work on "Medazzaland" (which you've told how much it has impacted you), and I find that interesting. I do think "Runway Runaway" is blatant "Rio" re-write and that isn't a compliment, lol. But it is harmless I suppose.

Dude, I'd say so. I'd love to pick their brain on some of the mid-period work they've done. While I understand the need to return to the more obvious DD sound, I have to say each record has a unique place in their evolution. AYNIN has helped me rediscover my love of "Astronaut" personally.

Glad you liked the Ronson album. I note that your favourite duran duran track is 'Midnight Sun'. I confess that i've rather neglected the album it comes from which is odd, when I consider it, because 'Electric Barbarella' it's most famous track, is my favourite track by the band. 'Medazzaland' wasn't even released in the UK. I had to get it on import. I don't seem to have ripped it to my library but will do so. Have a great weekend.

I wouldn't say I hate RCM, nor would I say I love it. For me it is pretty much around the middle of their albums, as far as liking it. I WILL say this though, "Tempted" is my fave song from them in over 2 decades. Best since "Meet El Presidente". Shame I never heard it in the clubs. It just sounds custom-made for playing there.
