Perhaps there is something even better than a Jedi to become. ;^) Consider: "The highest virtue one can exercise is to accept the responsibility of discovering and transmitting the whole truth. Some help others in order to receive blessings and admiration. This is simply meaningless. Some cultivate themselves in part to serve others, in part to serve their own pride. They will understand, at best, half of the truth. But those who improve themselves for the sake of the world -- to these, the whole truth of the universe will be revealed." from Passage 16 of the Hua Hu Ching, attributed to Lao Tzu. What kind of Jedi does the world best need now? What is the best kind of Jedi to become? And for what?

That's okay. :^) It's a toughy. But then again, some people never ask themselves that question once. And some people never stop asking themselves that question for their entire lives. And some few lunatics answer in the latter and they stick to it. :^) It's hard to live in a state of constant preparation, sometimes one simply wants to do what feels natural. Unfortunately where some actions and choices are concerned, this can be very fateful and change your life for a long time if not for good. Who knows what is best. Surely it is better to do what you say you wish to rather than not. Or not? Who knows? :^) It's a good sign that you care enough to think deeply on it. Release yourself from it and be happy. :^)

You have to ask yourself what you want out of life. Do you want to become a flamboyant amateur who can congratulate yourself only on some modestly memorable gestures of defiance? Or do you actually want to change the world?

And in truth, what do you suppose the powers that be would prefer you do with your time as far their interests are concerned? Throw an obnoxious fit, tax law enforcement, get yourself beat up and arrested? Or, figure out how their system works and address them on this level of power? One wastes your time and initiative, neutralizes you and your energy and generally discredits your agenda. The other forces them to defend themselves where they live.

Hmmm, you are determined aren't you? :^) Well, as I say, protest is something that I reject, especially living in the United States where protests of these kinds have been shaping policy and the socio-political landscape for many years. I do reject protest because I believe it delegitimizes the state and creates an ethos of self-righteous illegalism which makes criminality seem not only acceptable but obligatory. Not to mention that it generates intense disrespect for people, property and principles throughout society. No, no matter what, we must play by the rules if we are to have a civil society. We must play by them and WIN by them. There is your genuine revolutionary challenge, my dear. Solve this problem and you won't simply be shouting rude names at your overlords, you'll be beating them at their own game. Anything less is defeatist nonsense. :^)

Along this arduous path it is frequently said that one makes true progress when one ceases seeking rest, escape, resolution. When one accepts the work of knowledge, of the self and of life, as one's way of life, not as one's task, then one forgets the need to finish and simply begins to make discoveries. This can sometimes seem like the end, but in truth it is only the beginning. And this is why all true seekers must become true healers and true warriors at the same time, and must first and foremost strengthen themselves so that they may be able to continue their way of life. A way of life that never ends and never becomes easier...for as long as you live. :^)

We must make ourselves our most important experiments, if we wish to know the truth, to be able to be independently moral and to act with meaningful personal freedom. Nearly everything in the universe is hostile to this kind of order, but without it, what meaning does an individual's life possess? But, one of our greatest enemies is within. And this must be made right, along with everything else, and of course it is not easy, but that is the test...do you quit or do you quit trying to quit? Have you ever read much about Zen? Honestly I don't believe in the deeper objectives of Zen, such as total oneness, non-differentiation and personal valuelessness in the face of life. But, what is noteworthy about it is the rigor of the introspection, it is punishing, but it is also effective. Ask yourself why do you do what you do. Why do you think and feel what you do. And ask again when you find the answer.

Maybe, or simply, what can we do with what we have already? Are things not working because they can't be made to work with what we have to work with or because they aren't being addressed at all, despite what we may think? Let us start where we are, with what we have and ask ourselves why things aren't working. Let's not resort to cant, supposed conventional wisdom or lazy clichés. Let's really think about the problems and try to solve them. In applying an original problem-solving mentality to traditional and current tools what do we find. Start here first. Go as far as you can with the obvious before innovating new structures. Can we achieve our desires by simply doing what we think we are already with what we have at hand? I believe we can go very far along that path, but no one does.

Everything is difficult and thinking and speaking your own thoughts has always been one of the most dangerous things one could ever do. But what must always be respected is that it is the state of the conditions of institutional and social context and situatedness which gives the dominant forces their power. You cannot even consider successfully competing with them unless you change these conditions to naturally and effortlessly support your strengths and weakness, something they have been devotedly engineering for hundreds of years. Despite this, change is inexorably on the side of individuation and social cooperation, in the manner that HEGEL, not Marx has predicted, and it will inevitably continue, but it must also be enabled at those times fit for change by those with the insight, strength and courage to help things move forward. Protest is a meaningless and impotent endeavor and it completely misses the masses.

It is also a waste of the time and energy of those who actually have insight into the reality of the problem. The real work of such individuals should be to address the limits and opportunities manifest in the nature of the current structure, analyze the real challenges and threats, honestly define real objectives, create realistic solutions, chart short and long term goals, implement and test results. In American politics the God of this kind of strategic approach, on some level at least, was President Bill Clinton. He made everybody, including the Establishment, happy, while also making efforts to do both do more for people as well as recast and mainstream the typical characterization of this endeavor. If people really want a master's approach to political reform in America, if not the world, they would be well-served by analyzing the Clinton presidency and reading his books.

I think you're right about that and the new and the "alternative" does indeed get marshalled into an acceptable form so as not to truly become threatening to the status quo. This has always been a problem that I have personally felt in my own country. Nonetheless, the system DOES work, if you work it right. Government itself though is a monster, it is a monolithic power which is not in and of itself capable of being overcome, nor should it be. It is not government itself which should be fought, but those who control it. Any reform initiative which does not accept and follow this will alienate the body politic to its own disadvantage. Things can be changed from within though the effort is gargantuan and very long term. Frustration in the face of such challenge can easily make impotent and inevitably suicidal gestures seem like the only solution, but that in itself is a targeted response, to both eliminate and discredit opposition. It must be fought from within.

As for using buzzterms like "conspiracy theory" to discredit, really, well, anything, I find that beneath contempt. "Conspiracy theory" is a term used to simply ignore any number of both potential and actual strategies without any reason whatsoever. Conspiracies, by their simple definition, are the heart and soul of human action, especially in government, exclusively in espionage, and extensively throughout all other corps. Almost all oppositional military planning is a "conspiracy" by definition. And the heart of politics beats with actual conspiracy, the assassination of American president Abraham Lincoln, the illegal domestic espionage of American president Richard Nixon, the maintanence of domestic surveillance on American citizens by the FBI, the Russian Revolution, the assassination of Trotsky, etc, etc, etc. Seriously, what HASN'T been a conspiracy in the realm of key political realities? Why then create this dubious canard of "conspiracy theory" to discredit new speculation?

Oh you are a challenge, my dear. :^) You clearly have a good imagination and you surely enjoy thinking about hard things and trying to find real solutions. I have a thought experiment and perhaps a hypothesis for you to consider. What if the entire burgeoning resistance movement was actually instigated deliberately by its adversaries? What if the extremists who inch ever closer to total domination actually need this resistance movement to occur in order to take their work to the next level and more fully out of the shadows? What if this illegalist / anti-state movement is all part of the plan, which I personally think it is? Then such "revolution" is really only so much justifaction for official escalations, which, if maintained, can lead to even greater state-based illegalism, up to wholesale state-based homicidal caprice. Kind of like Nazi Germany.

Not only do I simply find the tone and effect of this kind of protest disagreeable, ineffective, if not counter-productive to the self-stated aims of its organizers, I believe that in its more radical expressions it is a necessary strategic element for the emergence of radical state-based extremism, hence it directly brings about what it says it is fighting against.

Excellent article, my dear, fresh and well-written. Well I hope you remember that I do share your concerns and desires for improvement, I simply espouse and adopt different methods, longer time-tables and a more reserved countenance. I believe I do recognize just how determined and deadly the adversaries of freedom are, in fact I may even consider them to be darker than you do. And I do commit to fighting them with my very life, I simply believe that my way is more fitting to the continuity of sanity in everyday life. Not to mention that I also share a sentiment from a character, though fictional, who could also be described, as Assange was in that article, as a "pompous egomaniac" and a "seething jerk," the infamous big screen serial killer, Hannibal Lecter, who once confessed that "Discourtesy is unspeakably ugly to me." I myself am deeply weary of the culture of disrespect which typically attends sentiments of poltical reform. I seek a different way. :^)
