Discovering the Echo Orbiter and finding out they were from South Jersey came as quite a surprise. While everyone is either moving to Athens, Georgia or being compared to bands from that area, Echo Orbiter have more of that Southern spirit than most NJ acts, playing a Beatle, Pink Floyd, Kinks influenced psychedelic that has all of the sass and catchiness of any Brit-pop act while still keeping that indie slacker ethic.
Recorded over a long period of time, A Moment in Life That’s Right is perhaps a bit dated in that some of the material was recorded as long ago as 1996, but it does show that the record isn’t the result of a couple overnights in a crappy basement studio. Original and creative, the record has a nice range in sound and style that shows a real appreciation for original composition and creation.
While it is only natural that comparisons would come to Elephant 6 bands, with all the dreamy storybook imagery that could easily either be the result of a strange childhood or too many hits of LSD, what I like about the Echo Orbiter is that they aren’t afraid to experiment and change things around, never sticking to any kind of formula with their songs.
