As a massive JV fanboy who's worked his merch table multiple times, it pains me to say he peaked with Pixel & Emerald. Romanian Names was so-so and White Wilderness was huge letdown. Still, he dominates my heart. I just hope he takes a few steps back towards rock and further from electronic garbage.

Working through his discog, I'm amazed he isn't more popular. Seems to make music similar in nature to Rufus Wainwright, but much more modern and fun. It's amazing through all of his records, he doesn't really seem to have made any mistep artistically. This stuff is enjoyable, wandering but focused, playful pop. +1 fan :)

Yes, "White Wilderness" was recorded with the Tiny Telephone (JV's studio) house orchestra (they're called Magik*Magik; he was wearing their shirt at CMJ!) - and not only with orchestra, but LIVE. Going to be so fucking tremendous.

I've been the biggest JV fanboy over the years...but I dont like the direction is going and I dont like Green Grow The Rushes. :( It's getting to electronic sounding and there's too much over dubbing and effect on his vocals. I remember an interview where he said something along the line about vocalists being afraid to let lose and really put their voice out there. So...what's the deal. :(

tiredtourist - Oh wow thanks for that. I didn't know the interlude 1 and 2 in Time Travel Is Lonely are actually classical music by Brahms and Bach. I only got slightly interested in classical music about a week ago.
